Jeremiah 22: A Witness, One Way Or Another

"People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, 'Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?' And the answer will be: 'Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods'" (vs 8-9).

The Lord is determined to use Israel as an example.  Ideally, this would be through their blessings.  When the world marvels at their exodus from Egypt, their inheritance of the Promised Land, or their deliverance from mighty enemies, these miracles are credited to their powerful God.  Likewise, the story of their punishment by exile and their reaping the consequences of sin against a holy God also speak volumes to the world.  They are the chosen people, after all.

Whether for good or for ill, whether on account of blessings or curses, Israel is destined to be a testimony to the power and character of her God.  They are chosen to be a witness, one way or another.
