I Chronicles 6: Heman And Asaph

In addition to the other items on his resume (shepherd, psalmist, soldier, king, lyre-player, giant-slayer, etc.) David maintained a great interest and patronage for the worship of the Lord.  He wanted to bring the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem, and it was in his heart to build a great temple for God, a task which he passed down to his son Solomon.

We get a glimpse in I Chronicles 6 of David's heart for praise and worship when he commissioned certain men (Levites) to minister before the ark with music.  "These are the men whom David put in charge of the service of song in the house of the Lord, after the ark came to rest there.  They ministered with song before the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, until Solomon had built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem; and they performed their service in due order" (vs. 31-32).  Chief among these "rock stars" of the worship before the ark were Heman the singer and his brother Asaph (vs. 33 and 39).

Today, when we see worship leaders, singers, and instrumentation in a church service, it is a callback to something that David started about 3000 years ago.  This man, who did so many other things well, transformed the praise of the Lord and instituted a worship practice that is still going strong today!
