Psalm 8 is one of my personal favorites. It begins with the familiar words (that I often can't help singing): "O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!"
I like the repetition of Lord - first, God is THE Lord, then - more intimately and relationally - HE is OUR Lord. Psalm 8 includes this phrase as both the beginning and the ending lines as a frame for the heart of the psalm.
Inside, we get a meditation on the role of humanity in creation. The psalmist (David, again!) is awestruck at the tremendous responsibility given to man in God's plan. The same God who created the wonders of the heavens has stooped to care about human beings? More than that, to raise us up and set us over the creation that He has made? This psalm is a reminder that men and women are very special, sacred parts of God's creation, and that we should take our care (stewardship) of the earth very seriously.
No wonder this is such a psalm of praise! O Lord, our Lord! How majestic is your name in all the earth!
