Paul's advice to Timothy reaches a crescendo in chapter four. He is determined to encourage Timothy in his mission of leadership service to the church.
Paul urges Timothy to "keep the main thing the main thing" when he says, "Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives' tales." (Internet culture, can you hear me now?) Godliness is what our hearts should be set on (vs. 7-8).
Paul outlines the tasks of the pastor in vs. 11-16. There are responsibilities of public reading of scripture, of exhortation, of teaching. Utter devotion is called for, and the implementing of teachings into the daily practice of life. Even though Timothy is young, that should not be a liability, but an opportunity to set the others an example in the practical areas of life - speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
