Psalm 108: From Psalms To Songs

The Psalms were originally worship songs.  In many ways, they are again today!

Even the less well-known Psalms have been mined for treasures today.  You will often hear echoes of verses from the Psalms in many modern praise choruses and worship songs.  There are at least two examples I know that stem from Psalm 108.

One is "Awaken the Dawn."  It plays off the theme suggested in verse 1, "I will sing and make music with all soul."  The song also includes the phrase, "We sing the songs that awaken the dawn," a reference to verse 2.  You can see a version of this song here:

Another instance is "Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth" (vs. 5).  We hear the preceding verses and this refrain in the song "Be exalted, O God."

As far as source material goes, it's hard to beat the Psalms.  And even artists today are still doing covers of songs originally composed by David.  You never know when another ancient Psalm will become tomorrow's popular music!
