What kind of grasp do you have on life? Is it a white-knuckled, both-fists-clenched, "grip of death?" According to Jesus, a looser hold on life is what is called for. Whether we're talking about sin and forgiveness, faith and works, or thankfulness and preparedness, Jesus recommends that we always put God first and ourselves last.
Luke 17 begins with a stern warning about leading others into sin (vs. 1 and 2). This reminds me of the dangers of being a teacher that James 3 cautions us about. We must guard against adjusting the commands of scripture to fit the demands of culture. Let's put God first and our desires second.
When we are asked for forgiveness by those who have sinned against us (vs. 3 and 4), let's give our desire for punishment or retribution a backseat, and eagerly accept their repentance.
In thinking about rewards for our faithful service (vs. 7-10), we must always remember that we are serving God and strive to put Him first in our lives.
The lepers show us that when we experience God's touch, we shouldn't rush off without taking the time to express our gratitude (vs. 11-19). God loves humility and thankfulness on our part.
Finally, when it comes to the hold that this world has on us in comparison with the Lord's call, Jesus' teaching to hold life loosely really comes through. When the Lord returns, we should be willing to leave everything behind to go and be with Him: "Those who try to make their life secure will lose it, but those who lose their life will keep it" (vs. 33). Hold on loosely!
