Psalm 46: A Song For Troubled Times

In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, many Americans turned to the scriptures in search of comfort, understanding, and hope.  I remember Psalm 46 serving as a beloved resource in those troubled times.

Though thousands of years old, Psalm 46 spoke in a timely, relevant way, reassuring those in physical and spiritual distress:  "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult."

Despite the terrors and change that may come upon the earth, the Lord remains unshakable.  We do not need to fear, for we have a rock-solid refuge of strength in Him.

The Psalm goes on to expound upon the comfort we can take in knowing that God is with us, even in the midst of the city.  No matter what else happens - the kingdoms tottering, the earth melting - God will be our source of help.

Be still and know that He is God!
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
