David's experience in Psalm 31 could be described as "trouble in the world, trusting in the Lord."
In the world, David has enemies, adversities and afflictions. There are traps and snares set for him, and he finds himself in disgrace and defeat. An object of mockery and scorn among his enemies, he is about as low as one can go.
Contrast this with what David has in the Lord! He knows he can trust in God. The Lord is his rock and his refuge, his fortress where he is safe. David knows that he can count on the Lord to deliver him from his enemies and protect him from evil. In this psalm, we even hear the cry that will one day come from Jesus' lips upon the cross: "Into your hand I commit my spirit" (vs. 5).
David's conclusion? "Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord" (vs. 24).
