Psalm 56: In God I Trust

Americans are used to hearing the phrase, "In God We Trust."  It is printed on our currency and makes a handy motto.  It kind of just rolls off the tongue and sounds almost soothing.  But what if we were to personalize this expression and make it first person singular?  How would we feel about saying, "In God I Trust?"

David the psalmist had no problem boldly stating that conviction.  He utters it twice in Psalm 56 (vs. 4 and 11)

Sometimes it is easy to trust in God.  When things are going well for us and life makes sense, trusting in God comes almost naturally.  We sense the rhythm of the universe and our place in it, and we feel that we can continue counting on God as we have in the past.

But it isn't always easy to trust in God!  Life resists the tendency to stay calm.  Storms come.  Opposition rises.  Stress enters the picture.  Difficulties must be endured.  Losses happen.  Suffering becomes a reality.

Where is our trust in God then?  Do we weather the storm or wither from the persecution?  David faced many such troubling moments in his life.  When he stood before a giant named Goliath.  When he was on the run from a murderous King Saul.  When he was attacked by Philistines.  When his son rose in revolt against him.  David had a choice to panic or put his trust in God.

David didn't pass all of his moral tests.  But his confidence in God never seemed to waver.  He had a deep, abiding trust in the Lord.  He knew that, with God, one man makes a majority.  He didn't need to fear anyone else, as long as he maintained the proper fear of the Lord.  After all, "What can a mere mortal do to me?" (vs. 11)

When David was afraid, he consistently put his trust in God (vs. 3).  We, my friends, can do the same.  Say it with me: In God I Trust!
