Leviticus 9: The First Official Sacrifices

Firsts are always attention-getters.  The first time a baseball player gets called up for a major league game (i.e. "the show").  The first time a young person gets to take the car out after they get their driver's license.  The first time a child steps on the school bus for his first day of school.  The first time a lawyer argues a case in court.  The first time a young adult leaves home.

Leviticus 9 describes Aaron's first day at work on the new job.  He is now ordained as high priest, and it is his responsibility to offer up all the different kinds of sacrifices that God had previously described to Moses.  In this chapter, we get a peek at his first official duties: offering up a personal sin offering, a personal burnt offering, a communal sin offering, two communal burnt offerings, 2 offerings of well-being, and a grain offering.

Everything goes well, and the people see God's glory when fire comes out from the Lord and consumes the offering on the altar (vs. 24).  The people fall down in amazement.

I'm sure it wasn't long before Aaron was wishing that it could have always gone like the first time...
