Psalm 70: When You're In A Hurry

I noticed several interesting things about this short psalm.

The psalmist is definitely in a hurry:

  • O Lord, make haste to help me! (vs. 1)
  • Hasten to me, O God (vs. 5)
  • O Lord, do not delay (vs. 5)

Notice the passive "let" statements that appear frequently in this psalm.  It is as if David is praying for the Lord to just let the cards fall this way:

  • Let those who seek my life...be put to shame and confusion (vs. 2)
  • Let those who desire to hurt me...be turned back and brought to dishonor (vs. 2)
  • Let those who say "Aha, Aha!"...turn back because of their shame (vs. 3)
  • Let all who seek you...rejoice and be glad in you (vs. 4)
  • Let those who love your salvation...say evermore, "God is great!" (vs. 4)

Finally, if this psalm seems a little familiar, it may be because these five verses seem lifted almost verbatim from Psalm 40! Comparing Psalm 40:13-17 with Psalm 70 may lead you to believe that David was recycling some of his top hits.  Although not an exact match, it is close enough that if anyone else had written it, it would be plagiarism!
