Psalm 81: The High Cost Of Idolatry

Psalm 81 almost reads like a lament - by God!

Through Asaph, God recalls the deliverance events of Israel's earlier days - the Exodus, the encounter at Sinai, the testing in the wilderness (vs. 6-7).  God had asked His people to refrain from worshiping idols and new gods.  But that apparently proved too much for Israel to do.

The verdict?  "But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me" (vs. 11).  As a consequence, instead of blessings they reaped curses.  They could have once again experienced deliverance and freedom from oppression if they would turn to the real God instead of false gods.  Their constant dalliance with idolatry has cost them dearly: they might have been fed with the finest of wheat and with honey from the rock (vs. 16).  Instead they were given over to their stubborn hearts (vs. 12).

Examine your choices.  What are they costing you?
