The Song Of Solomon 5: Lost In Love

Chapter 5 of the Song of Solomon describes a "missed connection" between lover and beloved, one that leads to the beloved's profession of deep feelings for the lover to the daughters of Jerusalem.

In verses 2-5, the lover calls to his beloved to open the door for a rendezvous with him and she responds favorably.  Unfortunately, by the time she gets to the door to open it, he is gone (vs. 6).  In dismay, she searches the streets of Jerusalem for her lover, getting into trouble with the watchmen who abuse her (vs. 7).

When she asks the daughters of Jerusalem to pass along the message that she is "faint with love" to her lover (vs. 8), they ask her what makes her lover so special (vs. 9)?  In reply, the beloved unleashes a barrage of complimentary images of her lover.  The similes and metaphors are much like what we heard earlier in chapter 4, but this time about the lover.  From head to legs he is described in terms of strength and goodness.  These are obviously two people very much lost in love with each other!
