Proverbs 24: The Thread Of Wisdom

Running all through the tapestry that is the Book of Proverbs is one thread: the consistent call to a life of wisdom!

"By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches" (vs. 3-4).  At the base of all the advice contained within Proverbs is the summons to live wisely.  It is through wisdom that all of the principles and guidelines make sense.  Without wisdom, the house cannot be built; without knowledge, the rooms stand empty.

Wisdom is good for times of peace and times of war.  Even in battle, Solomon says, wisdom is more important than strength (vs. 5).  Whatever arena you find yourself in - whether commerce or the courts, whether home or away, whether in relationships among friends or enemies, lovers or children, wisdom is what ought to guide our path.  And as Solomon has so frequently reminded us in this book, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

"My child, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.  Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, you will find a future, and your hope will not be cut off" (vs. 13-14).  If you want to find a future for yourself, never underestimate the thread of wisdom that must run throughout every aspect of your life!
