Psalm 102: Looking To God For Help

Where do you turn in your time of greatest need?  If you are a Christian, you would probably answer, "God!"  One of the ways we know that's the right answer is through our reception of the Bible.  The author of Psalm 102 shows us, by example, that God is the One to turn to when all else gives way in life.

We don't know exactly what the affliction of the psalmist is, but it appears to be a significant health issue.  Verses 2-11 describe a wasting disease that has left the psalmist depressed and at death's doorstep.  It sounds like he has very little hope left.

But what hope he does have left he places in the Lord!  The psalm begins, "Hear my prayer, O Lord; let my cry come to you."  In spite of his dire circumstances, the psalmist still believes that God can be his deliverer.

And why not?  Consider what else the psalmist (and we) believe about God.  "But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever; your name endures to all generations" (vs. 12).  God is King forever!  What can be too difficult for Him?  And so the psalmist appeals his case to God, asking for mercy and rescue.

We aren't told the outcome for the psalmist, how God answered his plea, if at all.  Yet Psalm 102 serves as an example to us of what to do in time of need.  It is always the right time to turn to God!
