Isaiah 31: God Or Egypt?

The people of Judah have a choice.  Who will they look to for help against the Assyrians?  The chariots of Egypt - or the hand of God?

Isaiah chastises the people who would appeal to the Egyptians.  Though they have numerous chariots and horsemen, they are only mortal.  They are not God (vs. 3).  The prophet warns the nation that reliance on Egypt will result in military failure.

A much better strategy, according to Isaiah,  is a spiritual one in looking to the Lord.  In fact, that is the only battle plan that can win.  God can be the defender who protects Jerusalem from the enemy.  "Then the Assyrian shall fall by a sword, not of mortals; and a sword, not of humans, shall devour him; he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be put to forced labor" (vs. 8).

This battle belongs to the Lord!
