Psalm 123: Eyes Up Here

Have you ever considered how important your gaze is?  Where we set our eyes has a huge impact on the direction we are headed.

I am usually reminded of this whenever I teach one of my children to drive.  (Katie is the current student driver in our house!)  Invariably, there comes a moment where I can point out to them the power of distraction.  For instance, if they look off to something on their right, the entire car starts drifting off to the right.  Where we look greatly influences the trajectory of our life.  Our eyes are our steering wheel.

How essential it is for Christians, then, to keep our focus on God!  "To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!" (vs. 1)  Our eyes should be trained on God.  We will hear this concept again in Hebrews: "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God" (Hebrews 12:2).

The Psalmist points out that eyes naturally look to the leader and master.  "As the eyes of the servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us" (vs. 2).

Look up!  Our eyes should be on God!
