Psalm 40: Choosing God

You don't have to live very long in this world to have an experience of being in "the pit."  It's a universal human condition.  We're not sure exactly what specific situation David is referring to in vs. 2 when he sings, "He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog."  But it is clear that God is the One who David turns to, and the One who delivers him from his circumstances.

Where do you turn when you need help?  David's testimony, offered before the great congregation (vs. 9-10) is that God is the One to choose.  "Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods."  In today's world, you have many choices to look for help, from rugged self-reliance to appealing to the government to turning to the latest scientific developments.  Now, as then, however, the best choice is God!

How did it turn out for David?  Returning to verse 2, he reports, "[He] set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.  He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God."

Choosing God is always the right choice!
