John 4: Thirst No More

Can you imagine Jesus asking you for a drink?  That actually happened to one woman in Samaria.  What happened next changed her life.

I love this story of a simple one-on-one conversation with Jesus that seems so...ordinary.  (It reminds me of the trendy "Coffee with Jesus" comic strips that appear on the internet.)  Evangelism and discipleship can happen in the quiet, unguarded everyday interactions of life.  We just need to be dialed in to the moment and whoever we may be with.

What do you make of "living water"?  For me, I find it such an apt description of Jesus' spiritual identity!  He is the One who can satisfy our souls so that our thirst is fully quenched.  We never have to look elsewhere if we have drunk deeply of the life of Jesus Christ.  In a world where our desires are purposefully and ceaselessly inflamed by professionals, it is such a relief to know that utter satisfaction is available to us in God's Son.

Indeed, once we have experienced the living water of Christ, it springs up as a well inside us.  We become like that Samaritan woman - not only satisfied ourselves, but overflowing with His grace and truth, letting the love of God spill over to other thirsty people in our lives.  When we pass it on, we give them the opportunity to discover for themselves that Jesus "really is the Savior of the world." (John 4:42)

  1. I love the picture of overflowing. I have a hard time trying to visualize what exactly that would look like in real life, other then the fact that it would be uncontrollable (provided we keep positioning ourselves to be filled). I think of what happens when a cup overflows. There is much commotion and unpredictability over where the liquid is going to go. I think it is awesome to know that our spiritual lives can be a positive version of that. We are going to overflow with His peace and presence. Our satisfaction in Christ, and our being filled by Him, will overflow and reach people in ways we do not expect and cannot predict.

  2. There is a side note in my Bible about this verse. It talks about how he spoke to a woman that others would not have. It shows that he was not concerned about class, or background. As Christians we should try to strive to be like him on such matters.
