Revelation 11: Echoes

I don't have much to offer in the way of prophetic interpretation of Chapter 11, other than to point out how important it is to grasp the totality of the Bible when studying Revelation.  Here are some of the allusions to other portions of scripture:

  • Measuring the temple area (Ezekiel 40) [By the way, the command to "eat a scroll" in Chapter 10 is also a throwback to Ezekiel 3]
  • 42 months (appears in Daniel, which also contains many visions of beasts and horns)
  • Shut up the sky so that it does not rain (Elijah)
  • Turn the water into blood (Moses)
  • Where the Lord was crucified (Jerusalem, according to the gospels)
  • Ark of the covenant (Exodus)
It is very difficult to have a firm grasp of prophetic images like these without a reliable knowledge of the Bible as a whole.

Some have speculated that the "two witnesses" will be none other than Moses and Elijah returned to Earth.  (I believe the plotline of the "Left Behind" series of books follows this interpretation.)  In my mind, the jury is out on that - but it is interesting to consider that both of these men left this world in unusual ways with no body remaining behind.  They also both appear in the Transfiguration scene conversing with Jesus.  Do they have a part to play in the endtimes as well?

  1. Didn't you have to have 2 witnesses in those days to document something as true? If Moses and Elijah get the job throughout history, they are blessed indeed.
