Job 29: Before...

Job 29 features Job's chapter-length reminiscence of his "glory days" when he was accorded respect by all.

Job pines for the bygone era of his life when he was blessed by God.  He remembers God's guiding light in his life (vs. 3) and his children around him (vs. 5).  He fondly recalls how he was honored and listened to by men of all ages: young and old alike appreciated Job's integrity and wisdom (vs. 7-11 and vs. vs. 21-25).

Job believes himself to be a righteous man, and states that he was acknowledged by all as a defender of the poor, the widow, and the fatherless (vs. 12-17).  He not only helped the blind and lame, but he fought against those who acted unjustly.

With such a good life - and a life full of goodness - Job believed that he would finish out his days in ease, enjoying the blessings of God until his final day (vs. 18-20).

But, alas, it was not to be.
