Job 31: With God As His Witness

Job's grand conclusion to his defense culminates in chapter 31.  It represents his "closing arguments" in the trial he wishes he were granted with the Almighty.  Job presents an exhaustive list of the righteousness he has pursued and the evil he has shunned.  Surely, Job insists, he has suffered unjustly - for there is no iniquity in him.

Here is a summation of Job's claims:

  • He has kept his eyes pure and has not sought after young women (vs. 1-4).
  • He has remained truthful and honest (vs. 5-8).
  • He has refrained from committing adultery (vs. 9-12)
  • He has been fair to his slaves (vs. 13-15).
  • He has been kind to the poor, the widows, and the orphans (vs. 16-23).
  • He has not turned to idolatry of money or nature (vs. 24-28).
  • He has not been vindictive toward his enemies (vs. 29-31).
  • He has provided hospitality (vs. 32).
  • He has maintained his integrity (vs. 33-34).

What else is there left to say?

The words of Job are ended.
