Numbers 10: On The Move

The time has come for setting out on the great adventure of claiming the Promised Land and the inheritance that the Lord has prepared for His people!

Before the first move of the people under the covenant and with the Tabernacle, final instructions come regarding two silver trumpets which are to be sounded by Aaron's sons (vs 1-10).  The priests will blow on the trumpets to alert the leaders to assemble, or the whole congregation to assemble, or for the people to set out from the camp, or for the nation to go to war.  "Sounding the trumpet" will from henceforth be a theme in scripture for God's people.

Everything is now ready.  In the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day, the cloud lifts.  Out go the people of Israel in procession.  First the eastern tribes under Judah depart.  Then the Tabernacle is taken down and carried by the Levite clans of the Gershonites and Merarites.  The southern tribes, led by Reuben, then set out.  In the middle of the procession go the Kohathites, carrying the most holy things.  (When they arrive at their destination, the Tabernacle will be already set up.)  The smallest westward tribes go next, led by Ephraimites.  Finally, the rear guard of the northern tribes led by Dan take their place in the procession.

What a sight that must have been!
