Numbers 4: Division Of Labor

Chapter 4 of the Book of Numbers details who is to do what concerning the moving of the Tabernacle.  God assigned a division of labor so that each clan within the tribe of Levi would be responsible for a certain segment of the work.

The men enrolled from the tribe of Levi for service at the tent of meeting were to be aged 30 to 50.  There were three clans within Levi: the Kohathites, the Gershonites, and the Merarites.

Aaron and his sons (from the clan of the Kohathites) were in charge of packing away the most holy articles within the Tabernacle: the ark, the table, the lampstand, and the altar and its instruments.  No one else was to touch or look upon these things, lest they die.  The Kohathites were then to carry these items to the next destination.

The Gershonites were responsible for carrying the curtains and screens of the Tabernacle, as well as the various cords, hangings and equipment.

The Merarites were in charge of transporting the frames of the Tabernacle with its bars, pillars, and bases, along with its pegs, cords, and equipment.

These clans were to be supervised by Eleazar and Ithamar, sons of Aaron.  In this way, everything was to be done orderly and reverently.
