Psalm 72: Long Live The King!

What should we desire for an earthly ruler?  What should we look for in a leader?  Psalm 72 gives us a verbal picture of a good reign.

He (or she) rules with justice (vs. 1 and 2).
His leadership brings prosperity and yields righteousness (vs. 3).
He looks out for the cause of the oppressed and downtrodden (vs. 4).
He has a long, rejuvenating term (vs. 5-7).
He has a vast territory (vs. 8).
He has dominion and mastery over his enemies (vs. 9-11).
He is merciful and compassionate (vs. 12-14).
He is blessed and is a blessing (vs. 15-17).

Although this psalm is ascribed to the king's son, Solomon, it would be even more apt description of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
