II Chronicles 9: The Splendor Of Solomon

Jesus once referred to Solomon in the Gospels.  He said, "And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these" (Matthew 6:28-29).  Although as the pre-existing Son of God, Jesus could certainly testify about the appearance of Solomon firsthand, He might also have had in mind II Chronicles 9 which describes Solomon's glory and splendor.

For instance, we hear of the visit of the Queen of Sheba, and how impressed she was with Solomon's wisdom.  This is a story that may resonate with spiritual seekers of today.  The queen had heard of the reputation of Solomon, but, doubting it, she wanted to see the truth for herself.  Apparently a skeptic, she plied him with many questions, which Solomon indulged and answered every one.  By the end, the queen had become a believer in Solomon's God (vs. 8).  She gave him great gifts, and received many back in return.  She took her experience with Israel back to her home country, and planted the seed of faith there.  It would go on to bear fruit.

We are also told of Solomon's incredible wealth later in the chapter.  "Solomon's glory" included his gold shields, his ivory throne overlaid with gold, his golden drinking vessels, chariots and horses, peacocks and apes.  Ships continued to bring him gold and goods to add to his wealth.  "Thus King Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom" (vs. 22).

Yet in spite of all of Solomon's splendor, which is considerable, Jesus reminds us that the simple lilies of the field outshine him.  The lilies were designed by God, growing simply in the field.  Let that be a lesson that the beauty of God revealed through nature will surpass any finery we can come up with, even at the height of our abilities and talents.
