Genesis 12: The Adventure Begins

God does something amazing in Genesis 12 - something that will alter the course of human history.  He picks one man out of a multitude and invites him to step into a life of adventure following the Lord.  In faith, this man responds, and the destiny of his family and of humankind is changed forever.

The man chosen is a 75-year-old in Haran named Abram.  God asks something of Abram, and He promises him something.

First, God asks Abram to "go."  To go to a new land, leaving his family and the familiar setting of his father's household, and heading off for a new land, sight unseen.  This is what was expected of Abram.

In return, God makes Abram a promise of blessings:

  • Abram will be made into a great nation.
  • He will be blessed.
  • His name will be made great.
  • He himself will be a blessing.
  • Those who bless Abram will be blessed.
  • Those who curse Abram will be cursed.
  • All families on earth will be blessed through Abram.

Abram's response?  It is a positive one.  The Bible says, "So Abram went, as the Lord had told him" (vs. 4). What better summary could there be of a man's life?
