Psalm 54: Deliver Me!

They say that when you get to the end of your rope, you will find God there.  If anyone knows the truth about that saying, it's certainly David!

David led a fascinating life.  He started out as a shepherd boy, slew Goliath, played the lyre for King Saul, led an army, married the princess, ran for his life, and lived as an outcast - all as a young man which is when this psalm is dated.  (Still to come was his own kingship, the conquering of Jerusalem, the building of his palace, the retrieval of the Ark, his fall from grace, surviving a coup, and many more adventures.)

Here, in Psalm 54, we get back to basics.  David is calling out to the Lord for rescue, for deliverance.  He pleads to the Lord that evil, godless men have it out for him, and that it is up to God to save him.  Fortunately, we know that God answers David's prayer.  David was delivered, time and time again, because of his trust and love of God.

While not everything in David's life may be worthy of imitation, his heart for the Lord certainly is.
