Genesis 13: More Than Meets The Eye

Abram and Lot had a problem in Genesis 13.  They were both so wealthy with livestock that their herdsmen were getting in each other's way and sparring with one other.  Rather than allow this to become a source of division between them, Abram suggests that they part ways to give each other more space.  He offers Lot first choice of the land before them.

Lot looked around and saw that the area around Sodom and Gomorrah was very pleasant and good for grazing.  He chose what he considered to be the best portion for himself.

But Lot should have looked more closely.  By choosing good land, he also chose bad neighbors.  The inhabitants of that land were so wicked that judgment was about to come upon them.  In the end, Lot would lose much from his closeness with Sodom and Gomorrah - even his wife.

But that's getting ahead of the story.  For now, we just now that Abram goes one way and Lot goes another.  Don't feel bad for Abram, however, in getting second choice as far as the land is concerned.  Not only will he be spared the punishment awaiting Sodom and Gomorrah, but God reiterates His amazing promise to Abram, saying that his descendants will inherit all the land upon which Abram walks and that they will be as numerous as the dust of the earth.
