I Chronicles 11: Superheroes In The Bible?

If we had superheroes in the Bible, I think they could be found in I Chronicles 11.  The exploits of David's mighty men would make for some pretty exciting stories!

In this chapter, we have such heroic men as:

  • Jashobeam - he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter (vs. 11).
  • Eleazer - he fought alongside David in a field of barley, repelling an attack of the Philistines (vs. 13-14).
  • Abishai - he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed (vs. 20).
  • Benaiah - he went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion (vs. 22).  He also snatched a spear from a seven and a half foot tall Egyptian warrior and killed him with his own weapon (vs. 23)
  • Three unnamed men met David's request for a sip of his hometown water and broke through the battle line of Philistines to make a daring raid on Bethlehem.  David was so touched by their sacrifice that he couldn't even drink the water they brought him at the risk of their own lives, but instead poured it out as a libation to God (vs. 15-19).

Yet perhaps the point is that these men weren't especially "super".  Yes, they were "mighty men", but they didn't have mutated genes or accidents with radioactive goo.  Instead, they served God alongside God's appointed servant, and they were able to accomplish great things in His name.  Guess what?  We can do the same!
