Psalm 127: Unless

There is a lot of power in that little word "unless."  The dictionary defines unless as "except on the condition that; except under the circumstances that."  Unless has the power to change the whole meaning of a sentence, or a life.

"Unless the Lord builds the house" - what?  "Those who build it labor in vain" (vs. 1).

"Unless the Lord guards the city" - what?  "The guard keeps watch in vain" (vs. 1).

The Psalmist (Solomon, in this case) points out the futility of doing anything without God being in it.  You want to build a house?  Better make sure that God is building it.  Otherwise you labor in vain.  Want to protect a city?  If God isn't guarding it, good luck!  Your work is in vain.

The Lord's presence and blessing is the necessary and active ingredient in so much of life.  Everything that we say we want: a happy family, physical health, material blessings, etc. is pointless - UNLESS God is at the heart of it.

Do you feel like you're not getting anywhere in life?  Are you nowhere near to meeting your goals?  Worse yet, have you achieved them, but they haven't brought you the satisfaction you desired?  Make sure that God is at the center of your life.  He is the One who is able to keep everything from being in vain.
