Esther 6: Mistaken Identity

Who says you can't find humor in the Bible?  The irony of Haman thinking that the king is about to honor him when in fact Mordecai is the intended recipient gives rise to one of the funniest scenes in scripture!

Imagine what is going through Haman's mind in this chapter.  At first the king asks what should be done for the one the king wants to honor.  Haman immediately assumes (and you know what happens when you assume!) that the king is coyly asking this because he really wants to honor Haman.  As the Bible teaches that pride goeth before a fall, so it does here.  As it turns out, the king had not been able to sleep, had been read the story of Mordecai saving his life, and had discovered that Mordecai had never been honored for his heroism.  That's the injustice that King Ahasuerus wants to remedy.

And so, all of Haman's showy ideas about how the king should show honor (putting on a parade for the guy with the king's robes and horse) goes to his archenemy Mordecai instead of himself.  In fact, Haman gets to be the one in the processional calling attention to Mordecai's greatness!

Things are definitely not boding well for Haman!  Events are simply not lining up as he had planned...
