Haggai 1: Kickstarter

The prophet Haggai's calling seems short and sweet.  He was given a word for a specific time and place: Get to work on rebuilding the Temple of the Lord!

Haggai's message functioned as a kind of kickstart to the stalled construction project.  He reveals how the people's lack of satisfaction (in farming, eating, drinking, clothing and saving) stems from their indifference to the state of the Temple.  While they live in "paneled houses" (vs. 4), the Lord's house still lies in ruins.  Because of this, Haggai tells the people that the Lord is sending a drought until they renew their concern for His house.

Haggai's prophetic words worked.  Verse 12 tells us how Zerubbabel and Joshua, together with the remnant, obeyed the Lord and started working on the Temple again.  A little motivation provided by the kickstarting prophet was all it took to get things moving again!
