Haggai 2: Happy Days Are Here Again

With the Temple work restarted, the people's concern for the Lord has been demonstrably renewed.  As a result, Haggai's words are encouraging.  He looks to the future and sees blessing ahead for Judah.

Verses 1 through 9 is a promise that the Temple, though seemingly modest compared to Solomon's, will soon be filled with the splendor of the nations, holding gold and silver in abundance.  In fact, God says through the prophet that the latter splendor of the house shall be greater than the former (vs. 9).

The second section in verses 10 through 19 focuses on the change that God will work in the fortunes of the Jews.  Whereas before they were perpetually unsatisfied (chapter 1), now they would find prosperity at last.  Because the Temple is back, God's rich blessings would once again be poured out on His people.

Finally, verses 20 through 23 is a prophetic word about a time of shaking to come.  Kingdoms and armies shall be reminded that the Lord is in charge.  Haggai's message includes a special word to Zerubbabel, to whom God says, "On that day, says the Lord of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, son of Shealtiel, says the Lord, and make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you, says the Lord of hosts" (vs. 23).  With almost messianic overtones, Haggai is saying that, for Judah, happy days are here again!
