Psalm 145: Forever And Ever

Psalm 145 really brings home the idea of God's everlasting nature, as well as the hope of eternal life spent worshiping in His presence.

Consider David's expression of what he personally expects to do forever: "I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.  Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever" (vs. 1 and 2).  This goes beyond a mere recognition of God's eternality and is instead a declaration of the psalmist's eternality!

The psalm continues as an outpouring of effusive praise to God.  Both His awesome greatness for the works He has done and His wonderful goodness for His acts of compassion are cited.  The psalmist proclaims that God's fame will be celebrated and told from "generation to generation" (vs. 4), something which incidentally has been true ever since David's time and still promises to hold true for eternity.  David returns to the theme of God's endless reign when he sings, "Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations" (vs. 13).  God's kingdom is forever!

At the end of the psalm, David returns to the understanding of God's creation sharing in His eternal nature by being in His presence forever and worshiping.  He concludes, "My mouth will speak the praise of the Lordand all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever" (vs. 21).  "Forever and ever" may be a long time, but that's what David saw!
