Zechariah 4: Zerubbabel's Mission

In Zechariah's day, the remnant that had returned from Babylon was wondering when the Messiah would appear.  Some thought that promised leader to restore the people to God might be Zerubbabel.

While Christians do not regard him as the Messiah, Zerubbabel did have an important task to accomplish.  He was to help restore the Jewish religion and temple after the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile.  The vision that Zechariah receives in chapter 4 is a promise that Zerubbabel, who began rebuilding the temple, will see it through to completion (vs. 9).

Along the way, we hear the famous scripture, "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts" (vs. 6).  God is able to accomplish His will over obstacles not with the ordinary means of men, but through His own miraculous ways.
