Psalm 146: Our Help And Our Hope

"Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God" (vs. 5).

As the psalmist reflects on where to place his trust, he concludes that God alone is the safe repository of such devotion.  Princes are no good; as soon as they die, their plans die with them (vs. 3 and 4).

But the Lord?  He is the One who:

  • made heaven and earth, and all that is in them (vs. 6).
  • executes justice for the oppressed (vs. 7).
  • gives food to the hungry (vs. 7).
  • sets the prisoners free (vs. 7).
  • opens the eyes of the blind (vs. 8).
  • lifts up the bowed down (vs. 8).
  • loves the righteous (vs. 8).
  • watches over strangers (vs. 9).
  • upholds orphans and widows (vs. 9).
  • brings the way of the wicked to ruin (vs. 9).

Therefore God is the only One uniquely qualified to be our help and our hope!
